So it seems that I'm finding out. There are some great usb 2.0 recording
devices out there. It's just a shame they have no linux drivers. At the
moment I'm leaning towards firewire, since there are drivers. Although
that means I have to buy a firewire interface in addition to firewire
devices and XLR3 microphones. Unless I can find some RME devices, as
they appear to be well supported in linux.
Make sure to check other sources before buying anything, though. Alsa's
HDSP driver doesn't support current firmware for HDSP9632 cards, for
instance, but you won't find any mention of this on the Alsa project
page (you can flash it to an older firmware version, but only on Windows
or Mac).
