Re: Fuijitsu/Siemens Lifebook 4215 driver

any ideas how to get the F/S Lifebook 4215 running under Linux?
Specifically,
[snip]
- the sound is dead. It is supposed to be an hda_intel sound, but
nevertheless, alsa reports "no such device". The kernel log reveals
"hda-intel: no codecs initialized",

Any messages about modem init failure? There were problems around
2.6.19/2.6.20 (IIRC) which would cause audio codec init failure unless the
modem codec is disabled. (I think that the parameter which is needed, if
that's the problem, is "probe_mask=1", but check with "modinfo
snd-hda-intel".)

Update on this: It's a bug in the hda-intel kernel module. The problem
seems to be that the chipset reports one pin that has zero connections,
and this confuses the kernel module by aborting the scan for an output
that doesn't have a DAC attached to it. I hacked up the module, and now
it works. I'll send out a kernel patch for this ASAP.

but lspci reports the chipset as

"Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition
Audio Controller (rev 02)"

- Last but not least, wireless seems to cause trouble as well. This is
an (according to lspci):

intel PRO/Wireless 3945AGB Network Connection (rev 02)

Noting the later posting saying "Debian"...
# aptitude install wpasupplicant firmware-ipw3945 ipw3945d
You'll also want the ipw3945-module-* for your kernel (given a Debian-built
kernel) or ipw3945-source.

Been there, done that. No avail. I also fetched the latest ipw3945
sources and recompiled this from scratch, but haven't found any working
configuration. I even tried without *any* encryption for the wireless,
but still no-go. iwconfig reports the router, and gives me an excellent
link quality, it just won't connect.

Alternatively, use a wireless tree snapshot and firmware-iwlwifi.

Either way, configuration lives in /etc/network/interfaces; you'll need to
use wpa_supplicant's "wext" driver. WPA2 works fine with this hardware.

Hmm, ok, I'll try whether that works any better. The ipw3945 seems to be
pretty unstable. At times, it really locks up the CPU, etc.

So long,
Thomas
