debian, but I'm trying with the latest kernel (2.6.22.5)

I'm just starting into Ubuntu myself, after years with SuSE, so I can't
give you any Debian specific advice. But I'm sure plenty of others have
Debian experience, and hopefully they'll pitch in to help.

I tried with opensuse 10.2 first, but that didn't go much further
either. I had an unusable touchpad, no sound and an even more unstable
wireless which crashed the machine once. )-:

got the touchpad working - it's attached to the serial port and thus
not found by the auto-detection.

It seems to me almost any Linux, and especially Debian, should be aware
of such a touchpad interface, and set it up during install. I've had no
problems with touchpads on various laptops and SuSE installs. Even with
simultaneous PS/2 mouse interface, they all seem to get along OK.

The problem seems to be that there's no way of really detecting the pad.
It's not an USB device that makes itself aware to the host, it's just
attached to the serial port, so how can the Os know that it is there in
first place?

Sorry I can be more helpful with the specific problems you're having. I
can only suggest you might try other kernels (maybe boot live-CDs?).

I tried the latest kernel, but that didn't improve matters. I fixed the
xorg.conf in the meantime, so the pad is working now. I also hacked up
the snd-hda-intel kernel module to make the sound working. But the
wireless problem is giving me the creeps.

So long,
Thomas
