The kernel knows to use the right module - the "used by" relates to
other modules that need "this" module to function. However, the count
of zero means that the module isn't being used.

In the 'messages' file I don't see anything related to eth or e1000.

That's not good - I'd expect to see it being installed.

3. What does /sbin/ifconfig -a show?

I see 'eth0' 'eth1' 'lo' and 'sit0'

and... Are the IP addresses reasonable? Are the RX and TX packet
counters showing any activity? Are there any error counts? Does each
interface have the magic words "UP" and "RUNNING" ?
