Try this:

dmesg | grep e1000

And see if your kernel hasn't already found it and used the e1000
driver
that came with FC5. If not, try "modprobe e1000". The e1000 drivers
have
come with all kernels from RedHat for quite some time.

I did this (dmesg | grep e1000) in the /etc directory and found no
result.

Did you try the rest of my suggestion, namely, "modprobe e1000"?
