I tried using:
http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=ipw3945&filename=ipw3945-1.2.2.tgz&use_mirror=kent
First of all, make sure that you really have the *latest* firmware, and
that when you download it from an ftp server, you use the binary mode
(it looks to me as if your binary is broken).
You *also* need to download the ipw3945 daemon (ipw3945d) and install
that. It comes with a readme how to do that - just copy the proper
version into /sbin.
You *also* need to download the latest firmware. Make sure you really
get a recent one, the older ones (e.g. the one in Debian) crashes the
chip pretty often and works very unstable.
You *also* need to download the latest ieee80211 kernel subsystem and
compile this separately. The one in the kernel is not recent enough to
support all features.
