I really liked the NEC units... but they're out of the business.
They didn't go out of business, NEC and Sony merged their optical drive sections creating Optiarc

Optiarc drives with a 4 digit product id are NEC developments although the
engineers now work in a nice new Sony building.....

A recent readcd from cdrtools allows to read C1 error statistics from NEC drives.


Is there a list of acceptable drives somewhere? ty
