ITYM "some printers will speak generic PostScript or PCL". For various
reasons (features, general bloody-mindedness of hardware manufacturers),
most printers seem to require at least a PPD to work in a reasonable
way.
The 3000n is a rather new printer. It seems to be a good choice as itI've not looked in depth at this one, but I would bet it does not run

PostScript natively. It is probably a PostScript emulation layer which
runs on the native, probably PCL, layer.
The Color Laserjet 3000n is supported by hplip-0.9.7 and up according to
the docs in hplip. I didn't know that it spoke PostScript. hplip is
provided by HP under the GPL, MIT, or BSD licenses depending on exactly
which piece of the hplip package you're talking about (Yay!). I've had
very good luck getting a 3600n to work with CUPS and hplip. HTH,
