The X server should be able to read the preferred timings from the

I used dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and it found the monitor.
Now I gave back the screen to his owner, so I can't make experiments
with it. Anyway I never had problems of configuration, I only wanted
to know if there's a way to make Ubuntu conscious of the kind of
monitor it's currently installed.
Using dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg it tried to recognize the screen,
and it actually found it, but when I went to System --> Administration
--> Monitors and graphics, it told me I was using a generic monitor...
I don't know why...
Monitors are pretty generic devices. If you're getting the resolution
you want there's nothing more to worry about.
