Hi,

I've read a few of your posts and thought I might clarify a couple of things.

Xorg does all the talking to your monitor and these days because of a specifcation called EDID things are very easy.

In theory the following happens:

Xorg: Oh, there's a graphics card.
Xorg: Hello graphics card, please tell me what your resolution, timing, and colour capabilities are please.
GFX card: I am an SQUIGY 7000 series and can do X, Y, and Z.
Xorg: Thank you, loading appropriate driver for you.
Xorg: GFX card, are you currently connected to one or more monitors or output devices?
GFX card: Yeah, I'm talking to 1 LCD monitor and a TV on seperate DVI interfaces, address 1 and 2 respectively.
Xorg: Thank you GFX card.
Xorg: LCD monitor, please tell me your capabilities please?
LCD Monitor: I can do X, Y and Z, however my manufacturer says I my best setting is Y.
Xorg: Thank you LCD, you shall be using Y. GFX card, sort LCD out.
Xorg: TV, what are you capabilities?
.....
and so on :)

Essentially, there is no need for any specific 'driver' in most (any?) cases, thanks to all output devices these days being pretty much bulit for only one ideal configuration, and the fact that it's happy to tell Xorg all about it makes Xorg's decision making process very easy!

Xorg will have reached perfection when it no longer requires any configuration file and merely auto-detects everything about the environment its running in.
