Thankyou for those pointers Jerry... I was just googling it there when
i decided to come check here even although I had posted last night
about the success of getting it back online.
I will however use your tips for the 40gb that went belly up (see if
it cant be recovered) and also as a safety "safe than sorry" procedure
on the 250gb.
Again, thanks for your reply.

Tam, never... ever... fsck a mounted partition. >:'O
Your best bet is "man e2fsck" or "e2fsck -h"
You should use the "-n" switch, until you're sure of what you are doing.
Using "-n" means "just testing..." and nothing is actually changed on the
partition. Once you have the switches figured out the way you want,
eliminate the "-n" switch and sit back and wait for it to complete.
Depending on the partition size and how corrupt it is... it can take quite
a bit of time to finish. Once done, you should be able to mount them as
usual.
I usually use: e2fsck -vp /dev/hdxx
Cheers...
