It's running in WINE so you can have freedom of choice in what
audio API you use. OSS (/dev/dsp) is depreciated. ALSA is state
of the art, and allows for various configuration through
~/.asoundrc, which also includes snooping audio data and stuff
like that.

And then there's oldie but goldie ESD (Enlightened Sound Daemon),
still maintained and IMHO very usefull. A few days ago I wanted
to show a video in a lecture with sound. The problem was only:
The audio plugs at the front table were broken, but only there
was a plug to the video projectior. At the rear of the
auditorium was another, function audio plug, so I quickly booted
a second laptop started ESD on it, connected both by WLAN, and
had the audio rerouted to the ESD on the other laptop, which was
connected to the audio system. It worked flawlessly.

ESD is also cool, if you want different users on the same system
being able to access the audio hardware simultanously.
