Once I press play on the camcorder I get what seems like a few hundred bytes of input and then the entire machine freezes up. It appears to be freezing up at the hardware level too.
After a bit more research I have found that it appears to be a problem with the dv1394 module itself. dvgrab however, is able to handle this so problem solved.
