Re: High resolution LCD display quest.

Probably hes looking for a display, that e.g. has 1600x1200
pixels at a 19" size (BTW: You can order Dell Latitude Laptops
with such a display).

And about the feasibilty of multi-megapixel displays. Do you know
about Digital Cinemas? Digital Cinema projectors have a
resolution of up 4096x2560 pixels. For comparison, my EOS300D
shoots images with 3072x2048 which are 6.3 megapixels. Digital
Cinema projectors either use DLPs or LCDs for image creation,
which are about 50mm in size - these devices exist.

Since it's not problem to manufacture LCDs with such a high
physical resolution, it would be perfectly possible to build 19"
TFTs that have about 20k x 20k pixels resolution, however it
would make no sense.

If one follows the rule, that an image usually is watched from
the about the image's diagonal distance, one can calculate, that
the human eye cannot resolve more than about 400DPI for a 17"
watching distance. Today's highest resolution displays have
about 180DPI, so by tripling the today used resolutions, we'd
have the optimal resolution. And todays graphic hardware easyly
provide enough memory and calculation power, to deal with that.
Just the video links must be enhanced a little bit, something
like quadruple link DVI, which is merged into a single link DVI2
or so...

But technically it's possible to build such stuff with today
technology. It's just not done yet.
