Problem is Sun's JAVA, there is no 64 bit applet plugin
1) Couldn't care less of applets. A workstation has to run software
quickly, for games use PS2,3 or whatever is called.
2) If you absolutely need a stupid browser plugin use firefox 32 bit, or
opera which is closed source and compiled obtusely 32 bit only.
3) Almost 4 years of x86_64 have proved i386 is dead.
4) Apart from a puerile plugin objection (and closed source) open source
has no reasons to be compiled for i386 anymore. Even nvidia closed source
drivers are 64bit from at least a couple of years.
Linux has a long history, and a bragging point, concerning older
hardware. In fact, that's exactly why distros like DSL and Puppy are
made. That's why Debian can be stripped down, with plenty of howtos out
there that tell how to do it on old hardware. That's why there are
still various distros that put out products for G3 and G4 Macs.
In your world, 32-bit may be a bygone era. In the real world, the one
/most/ of us live in, there are far more 32-bit machines in use than
64-bit. And that's likely to be that way for a long, long time to come.
