If you post specific questions~
what *you* mean by optimising the io-subsystem
I would like to data transfers to be fastest I could afford
~
What is it you specifically need to optimise?~
Speed. That is why I was mostly interested in internal memory and
caches as well as RAM speed
~
When you write something like "X86-based box"~
I'm not sure why you want to limit to Intel hardware
My mistake AMD is obviously fine too. I meant commercially available
~
Are you trying to build a normal desktop system, a gaming system, an Internet server?~
Internet server
~
Is there a budget?~
Around $800 but I could through in more if I see the benefit
~
The distro you want to use on the system can even influence things, as some are better at using newer, more modern, hardware right "out of the box", but that depends on your OS skill.~
Linux and/or FreeBSD
~
Note: You will not necessarily get a 'cheaper' computer by building it yourself, but it is possible to build one that matches your needs better than one "off the shelf"~
Well, yeah! and the options out there are?
~
Thanks
