Hi All-

Without even citing others' answers, simply forget 32 bit. It's the
past, let them rest in peace.
Problem is Sun's JAVA, there is no 64 bit applet plugin for
Firefox/Mozilla/Seamonkey, "because there is no demand". You also have
to run similar tweaks to get other media formats running on 64bit. There
is a wrapper for running 32 bit plugin-ins for a 64bit firefox, but
nothing of that is nice.

It's a non-issue, the solution is to use the 32 bit version of Firefox which runs fine on 64 bit Linux. I'm using 64 bit Fedora with the 32 bit version of Firefox, the Java plugin works fine.

All correct, but it means a lot of code duplication, too. A 32-bit firefox also requires 32-bit libraries, all I *also* need to keep on the system, for a second time. Funny enough, the java VM is available in 64bit, only the plugin is not. I wonder what's so hard providing it.

The speed advantage of 64 bit over 32 bit is questionable - I don't see any major advantage unless someone really provides me with objective timing measurements. Yes, I am using a 64bit system running a 64bit Debian here. But for a different reason - my software has to be 64bit compatible, and it's best tested on a 64bit system. For my programs, the performance advantage of x86_64 is only marginal. For servers, the larger address space is, however, a significant advantage.
