Has anyone found a fix for setting the screen resolution with the

I'm having a lot of trouble trying to get Suse 10.3 with Gnome 2.20 to
display the 1680x1050@60 lcd screen resolution. It only works with the
DVI connection but when that's switched to a VGA connection the
resolution reverts to 1024x768@60.
The problem is not related to Gnome, it's just a X11/X.Org thing.
Probably the driver reads a wrong EDID from the monitor. Use the
"IgnoreEDID" option, to make the driver ignore any hardware detection.
Then hardset the resolution you want, eventually by supplying own
modelines.
Don't use SAX(2). IMHO this program creates the worst xorg.conf files I
can think of.

Thanks very much Wolfgang. I'll try that, I assume it goes somewhere in
the xorg.conf for monitors?
After setting up the SuSe connected to the DVI port of the display,
switching back to VGA port doesn't send a signal, so I'm looking at a
blank screen when I switch PCs.
It's the same problem with WinXP-SP2. No matter what is specified for
the monitor it always reverts to VGA. By un-hiding "unsupported display
modes" I can get XP to 1600x1200@60 VGA resolution, it's either the
nVidia hardware or nVidia driver problem.
xrandr in SuSe 10.3 returns "no adapter found".
I'm using the rpm package recommended by nVidia for SuSE 10.3 but I'll
look for nvidia-settings.
The ATI cards or drivers work correctly, ie, displays 1680x1050@60 while
connected to the VGA KVM adapter.
