Your modem might be com5 in Windows, but that doesn't necessarily mean
A Linux newbie asks: How do I connect to Internet with dialup modem
using a live DVD of Ubuntu 7.1?
In System, Administration, Network, Modem properties I set:
modem port to com 5: /dev/ttyS4
phone number: myISP#
username: myusername
password: mypassword
Then put a check to "Enable this connection". Not knowing what to do
with the three check boxes on the Options tab I left them blank.
it is ttyS4 in Linux. The modem on my PC (a Compaq Presario with builtin
modem) is /dev/ttySL0. The device name, if there is one, will depend on
whether it is PCI or USB, a hardware modem or a Winmodem, and if it's a
winmodem, whether the chipset is supported. You might try
ls /dev/tty[[:upper:]]*
ttyS0-ttyS3 are usually assigned to the legacy serial port addresses,
and these device names might exist even if the ports don't.
