freecom external hdd file transfer stops

Hi

Still trying to get my external freecom 'tough drive' (hard
disk) to work (see previous posts).

Here is the problem: when I do a copy action to the drive,
the file transfer stops after some time, while it is not
finished, giving errors like:

cp: cannot create regular file
`/media/disk/test/minolta/buiten/portretvannijmeg
enfotos/.xvpics/pict0082.jpg': Input/output error

The drive itself does not seem to be faulty, I dont have the
problem on a windows machine. I use the latest version of
debian myself. I also tested the drive with a kubuntu live
cd, wich gives the same result. In the example above I tried
to copy a directory containing a number of sub directories:

cp minolta /media/disk/test

This action then stops in the middle of copying. When I then
try to copy the subdirectory in which the error occurs
first separately, this does work. After the cp has broken down,
the drive is still spinning (so no timeout problem, as suggested
in earlier posts). The drive is connected directly to my laptop
(dell i510m) usb port.

I add some error msgs for completenes here:

ubuntu@ubuntu:/media/disk/test$ dmesg |tail -n80
