You didn't do your homework, before you spent your money. The best
possible solution for you is to format the partition as vfat and start
over. Next time, avoid apple proprietary filesystems at all costs.

I wouldn't. If in desperate need, buy another, and experiment with
that. Are they cheap where you live?.

Is it possible to initialize an iPod and make it accept stuff sent to it
via USB without using iTunes?

Yes... I use GTKPOD or GNUPOD tools... Works perfectly, no iTunes involved.
Both apps available under gentoo in portage.

I still have a week to excange it by another [iPod] or to get the money
back. (We have this here, I dunno if it's something in law or a service
provided by the shop. Of course I could just get the money and buy some
non-DRM stuff, I'm also doing (or trying to do) research on that.)

How much storage space do you need? Next to ipods, my old Sandisk SDMX1 has
been a faithful companion. I bought the 1g one, back when they were still
expensive... sound great, hardware compatible to anything that has a USB
port and understands vfat...

The E200 series players are Linux friendly, just like my old SDMX1 was...
