I've been happy with my Belkin F5U407 USB2 4-Port mini hub which costs
under ten bucks from Amazon. It's only 4-port and isn't externally
powered, but I figured that if it didn't work I could live with having
wasted that much money, and so far it's happily even driven my
USB-powered Canon scanner (which I suspect must be drawing over-spec
current?). So, if it might work for you, then it could be worth a try.
