I have just spent a whole day installing Centos 5.3 on an old machine
and now as I take disc 4 out and reboot, I get the black screen with
Login and Password.

I can remember being asked for one Login and pwd early in the install
but chose not to use one, then it asked what the box is going to be
called and I said Linux... (I think).

How in earth can I get myself out of this??
Thanks guys..

I didn't assign a root password on the install as it said I did not have
to. I get the black screen with Login then Pwd and I have tried every
option I can think of there.

When I reboot I get the blue Centros screen.

That's not a CentOS screen, that's the GRUB bootloader. If you didn't set a
root password, then the root account cannot log in, and since you didn't
create a regular user account, there's no way you can get in except by
booting up into single user maintenance mode, i.e. runlevel 1. However, I don't know your partitioning layout, so I cannot tell you exactly
what you need to do in order to get there, so I would recommend that you
start up with a live CD or rescue CD, get yourself to a shell, and then
mount your root filesystem to the */mnt* of the live cd system, and then
issue...

chroot /mnt /bin/bash

... and...

passwd

When you've entered a password for the root account, issue...

sync
/sbin/shutdown -r now

... and then log in as root with the new password, and create regular user
accounts.

Thank you for your time and help however as a newby I am bound to be goofing up all over the place.

I decided to start again so with the 5.3 CDS I started the install andgot through to 98% of CD 3 but I
was called away.

Came back this morning and the box was on, but had frozen..

Every time I reboot, cold boot, I come up with black screen..

Vers 0.97 <grub> Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. TAB etc..

Is there a way I can get to CD 4 and continue the install, or am I back
to the top again??

Thanks

rock

I recently did a CentOS 5.2 installation
and got it installed by just using the first two CD's

I had to do a selective install

There is a definite bug in the installer
as when i *deselected* some packages it actually called for *more* cd's

but eventually I got it
.
