Hello,
I have a Lexmark X5470 all-in-ine which now that I have upgraded from
Windows XP to Windows Vista it does not work all the time even despite
the fact that I have installed the new driver from the manufacturer's
site.
I would really like to keep on using the scanner so I was thinking of
installing linux in addition to Vista on my hard drive and using the
scanner from Linux. The all-in-one is connected to the laptop via a USB
cable.
The problem is that I don't know whether the all-in-one is supported
under Linux and am not sure how about checking this out.
Furthermore I am not sure what software I could use from Linux to scan
documents from the device.
Thank you for your advice,

Lexmark has notoriously poor Linux support, I doubt if it will work. HP
all in ones are supported although I can't say that I'm totally happy
with the scanner behavior on mine. The printing support on HP's is 100%,
I have no complaints there. The scanner frequently gets into a state
where Sane reports that the scanner is busy. I use a Win2K VMWare Virtual
machine on my system and my suspicion is that the scanner interface gets
screwed up when I switch the USB connection between the Linux host and
the Windows client, a power cycle on the HP Office Jet is the only thing
that will clear it. The printer interface always works, the problem is
strictly the scanner.
One work around on HP's, I don't know if your Lexmark has similar
capability, is to scan to a USB key instead of from a computer. The HP's
have a front panel interface that allows you to scan, print, FAX or copy
from a USB FLASH card. It's clunkier than doing it with SANE but it
always works.
