I have some unused stuff lying around and want to set up a little
experimental system with it. But at power-up, the harddisk is not
recognised by the motherboard.
The harddisk is fairly recent, a Maxtor DiamondPlus Max9 of 120GB, with
a mention ATA/133 HDD.
The motherboard is hard to identify, here's some info from the startup
screen:
Award Modular Bios 4.51PG
(566WAQ0B) Intel i430TX PCIset(TM)
AMD K6/200 found
01/02/98-i430TXALI5135-2A59IH2JC-00
An older, much smaller disk was recognised and useable without a glitch,
so I reckon the Maxtor drive uses technology not supported by the MB
and/or BIOS.
Upgrade the BIOS so that it does know? But how to flash it without an
O/S installed?
Perform a minimal install on the 80MB disk that would include drivers
for the moderner big disk which could then carry non-essential file-systems?
TIA,
A PCI IDE controller might help, but on the other hand that beast will
support maybe 64MB Memory, memory you can't even buy nowadays. What
the hell would you use it for anyway?
