Canon is notorious for making their interfaces proprietary, despite images
being saved as simple mpeg files. As others have suggested, get a card
reader and eliminate the camera as an interface.

I have a Canon digital camera which doesn't show up as a mass-storage device.
It uses PTP instead, but software such as Shotwell works fine with that.

As is normal with these things, the card is formatted for FAT.
