On my Slackware box, pressing control-alt-backspace will bring down X.

Yep, ctrl-alt-backspace will kill X unless that key combination has been
disabled by xorg.conf or some other mechanism.

On recent version of xorg that I've used, you have to hold down alt+ctrl
and press the backspace key twice.

With kdm or other dm running, this may have to be done this several times
to trigger the respawning too fast, which should drop you to a terminal
login session.

The <CTRL><ATL><BACKSPACE> doesn't seem to work.

I'm assuming there must be a line in a configuration file somewhere that tells Ubuntu to load X, perhaps the easiest way would be to comment out this line for now. The next question is how do I find it?
