We've got the second setup you describe (i.e. the username to the left of
the @ is different).

That looks like it also would work. However a user at my own ISP gave me
the following simpler tip:

The solution (at least for my ISP)is to put "user+accountname" in the login
field for under Network -> Receiving. This then causes the server only to
send mail for "user@accountname.isp.net" rather than for all users.
