Let me point out Knoppix runs from CD / ramdisk and as such its performance
does not necessarily reflect the performance when installed on a hard
drive. Knoppix is not intended for the typical office desktop user.

Yes, it is due to running from CD and ramdisk plus having to share RAM with
both ramdisk and applications including the KDE desktop environment.

Use a distribution more suited for the intended purpose like SuSE Linux or
Mandrake Linux for example. Many of your issues were a direct result of
selecting the wrong distribution for your particular expectations and not a
failure on the part of Knoppix or GNU/Linux in gemeral.
