The SIL3112 Chip's Hardware RAID is as yet unsupported to the best of my
knowledge, however RedHat9 will happily run Software RAID on SATA drives.
By default, you don't get DMA appearantly, so so far it's slow, unless
you take special pains to make DMA work. Accepting the default
configuration of Red Hat 9 Pro Up2Date, and running Software Mirroring
Raid on a pair of SATA drives from seagate (120GB each), I notice less
than one error per day on average, usually some status is wonky, the
driver does a reset and life goes on. I've had more errors than that
from ATA DVD-RAM drives lately. There was one 24hour period during which
my SATA config went belly-up for no reason, I took it down to bare metal
(reformatted/partitioned the drives), reinstalled and restored from
backups, and got on with life. Why and how it began working again was as
mysterious as why it stopped. During that same 24hour period, my PPC
Linux box went belly up with flakey disk errors on two different SCSI
busses and on two different IDE/ATA busses. Interestingly, that was NOT
a period during which I experienced AC Power Mains problems, whereas
during power outages handled by an APC UPS, there have been no errors.
That was seriously a bad hair day. It did ocurr within 24 hours after
visits to my website from the U.S. Military, the U.S. Government, etc...
and I chalk it up to a psychotronic attack by The Agents of The Matrix.
Welcome to the world of the real... The Village.
Your (s)milage will vary :-)
