Dave,
Glad you're finding the transition to linux painless and fun using the
Knoppix Live CD Distro. Here's MY answers to some of your
questions...

I have been totally Windows free since March 2003 since I finally got
my last pesky telephony VOIP app working in Linux. My distro of
choice is Knoppix. This is basically Debian testing / stable. SUSE is
good as well, but I prefered a non-commercial (and non-rpm package)
distribution. YOUR choice will be based on YOUR preferences. I
recommend you review the Knoppix english site and support forums at:
www.knoppix.net

Several ways to do this. I will gloss over the details and provide
you a high level overview with commercial solutions (VMWare,
Netraverse Win4Lin, and [possibly]Codeweaver Crossover Office) and
non commercial solutions (DOS emulation, Codeweavers WINE, [possibly]
BOCHS emulation).

Xine is very good, but when / if you install Knoppix (or other distro)
to hard disk, you'll definately want to check out MPLAYER. Codecs up
the kazoo...

This will involve a little (or a LOT ;) of trial and error. In
addition to the kontrol panel, look at the specific application
options (konsole and konqueror).

Maybe, maybe not. A quick google on "leadtek opengl linux" showed a
mixed bag depending on your model. Good luck, but I'm getting along
okay using just XFree86 without opengl accelleration, so NO sympathy
from me, you gamer you! ;)

Knoppix should give you a good overview of most productivity apps
right out of the box. My best advise to get answers in this usenet
group is that you might want to refer to your distribution as debian
(testing/unstable) and not knoppix, as knoppix is really a live demo
distro based on debian. It'll keep the purists off your heinie.
As a total aside, I *hear* that the knoppix-installer utility (as
opposed to the old knx-hdinstall utility) on the most recent KNX
distros (7-26-03) are really a sweet way to get KNX installed on your
local drive. Haven't seen it yet, but hoping it lives up to the hype.
knx-hdinstall always got the job done just fine though.

free indeed!
peace out
