Please don't use Microsoft as THE only target. Open Source is effecting
every major technology company. It is truely a great equilizer!
Companies like IBM, HP, Sun, Cisco and the list goes on, are under
threat. Please don't say that these companies are not monopolies like
Microsoft. Just like Microsoft products are under threat, other
technology company products are under threat as well. Linux is maturing
fast on every architecture mainframes (IBM/HP), midrange (Sun), routers
(Cisco)....you name it, and Linux will displace them.
As alarming as that sounds, my guess is that Linux will spawn the jobs
back but not in a monopolistic way.
In the services sector, any business person would go for cheaper costs.
It is plain common business sense. A business person in
Chicago/Tokyo/Frankfurt/New Delhi/London will look for cheaper labor.
That you must accept as the basic truth. You would do the same if you
were in their shoes. It is like buying medicines in Canada/Mexico since
they are cheaper in those countries than in the US. The same is true
for IT services and manufacturing.
Bottom line, to be competent in this economy for an IT job, you are
better off learning about Linux. Don't blame someone else for it.
