booting w/o initrd

Hi,

I run a debian 3.0 system. Since I installed it, it seemed to require an
initrd to boot. I do not see why an initrd should be necessary w/ my system
configuration (no exotic hds, etc.), yet when I removed the initrd parameter
in the boot loader config (grub), the system cannot boot the kernel. How do
I get rid of the initrd?

Thanks for your help.
