gaim doesn't neccessarely need linuxthreads but the install warned
that it was usual to install glibc with linuxthreads. (I tried to
compile gaim 0.68 and it warned me that I needed glibc >= 2.0.0. I
have gaim 0.59 installed on my box but MSN won't accept it's
connections as it warns me to upgrade.

Yes but that has it's shares of problems. For example when I upgraded
from 7.1 to 8.0, it didn't take my existing graphics setup so the
install program defaulted to a higher resolution & refresh rate than
my screen could handle. I would probably have to redo my fonts setup
as well.
