Kinternet (SuSE 8.2)

System: SuSE 8.2
   with Dial-Up Modem
Problem: Kinternet refuses to work after install is finished

When installing, I configure the modem during the
 installation dialog. I do the "Test." It works
 SuSE is contacted and I get release notes, etc.

After the install is complete clicking on the Kinternet
 "plug" applet puts a green "cloud" around it and no
 further action.

Installing "Kppp Dialer" does work, but Kinternet does
 not work.

Any suggestions? I went through SuSE database and
 "smppd" status is running. I am an intermediate
 Linux user.
