do you know which sound driver system you're using - oss or alsa? I'm
guessing, but you might get this problem if you have alsa installed without
the oss compatibility module.

Try logging in as root and do 'lsmod'. This will show all the kernel modules
you have loaded - if there are loads beginning with 'snd-', then you're
using alsa; if there's one called 'sound' then you're using oss.

if you are using alsa, try one of the native alsa mixer programs - amixer or
alsamixer.
