This is true of LCD monitors that have analog inputs, although most LCD
monitors accept a much narrower range of refresh rates than do modern CRT
monitors. (This isn't a real problem because the wide ranges CRTs accept
enable them to run at high refresh rates, which helps eye strain; but LCD
technology works differently, so high refresh rates aren't required.)
There are LCD monitors with digital inputs, though. These monitors
require their own digital display cards, which must be supported by Linux
(or XFree86, to be precise). I've never looked into this matter very
closely, so I don't know how common XFree86 drivers for digital display
cards are. I recommend checking the usual sources, such as
http://www.xfree86.org and the card manufacturer's Web site, to learn
about XFree86 support for any given digital display card.
