I'm having a performance problem with an ASUS P4P800-VM motherboard (i865
chipset) and Redhat 7.3. I've tried upgrading the kernel to 2.4.20smp, but
no luck. The same kernel on an ASUS P4S800 doesn't suffer from the same
performance issues.
What I mean by performance issues is that if I run a CORBA IDL compiler on
a certain source file, on a P3-933 (neither of the above motherboards), it
takes about 5-7 seconds. Run the same test on the P4S800 (2.4GHz CPU) it
takes approx 8 seconds (OK, a little slower for some strange reason... but
anyhow..), but on the P4P800-VM that test takes over 3 minutes! (On the
plus side, the kernel does recognize the hyperthreader CPU) (During this
test the CPU is pegged at 100%. Doing an strace on the application shows
that on the fast results, it makes a lot of calls to brk(), and they just
fly by. On the slow machine, it has the same brk() calls, but they only
march their way up the screen.....)
Also, for interest's sake, I tried booting into Knoppix 3.3 (kernel 2.4.22)
and doing the test from there, and that also brought the time back down to
the 8 second range. (But it doesn't recognize the hyperthreader...)
Does anybody know what I'm missing here?
