It kinda depends on which distribution you're using. I think RH has
'switchdesk' to change the default desktop. But don't confuse the
"display manager" with the "desktop".
The display manager is what provides a graphical login screen. Commonly
used display managers are gdm (Gnome) and kdm (KDE). If using a display
manager, you have a means to choose which desktop you want to start up.
With RH, it's the "Session" choice. Selecting a desktop from that popup
will give you a choice of making it your default.
But choosing a "desktop" is not going to change the display manager.
