Well, Gee if you read the post that you replied to (there should be a
little more of that going on, but I guess I went just a little bit out
on a limb asking a windows user to read...)

    (See quote below)

I also noted that SuSE 7.0 (which I believe was roughly contemporary of
SuSE 7.0, but 6.3 also supported these devices also, right out of the
box (although I am not sure about the HP 4MV printer, as I did not have
that when I was using 6.3)) My point is: Linux supports more hardware
right out of the box than Linux does, from my experience. I don't have
Windows XP, but my understanding is that many items require a driver
from the manufacturer to be functional.

I always go out of my way to be fair to windows, but obviously some just
like to ignore facts that don't fit with their view of the world.

The fact is simply this: linux offers a compelling value proposition,
and one that is only increasingly compelling with time, as more and more
vendors, companies countries contribute to linux, which is really a
standard for how PC hardware can be made to function.

It is impossible for MS to compete with this: They are trying to compete
with FREE. It will never work! The reality is MS is competeing against a
legion of Not-for Profit entities (be they individuals or or organizations)

The development of a free open standard is in the interests of:

users (who will get more for less)
hardware manufacturers (who can build to a standard, without paying
    liscensing fees)
PC sellers (who gain control of their product, and can create value by
modifiying the software where apropriate, and can also be in control of
    the price of their products)
Governments who can cut the liscenceing fees

    Erich

    > Also, note that SuSE 7.0 also supported all of the above hardware "out of the box" except for the Epson printer, if you are looking for something that is more of a contemporary of Windows 98SE.
