how to fix 3.4 second delay after logging on console?

After I type my login and password on the console, like below:
Debian GNU/Linux testing/unstable tarnica vc/2
tarnica login: miernik
Password:
Linux tarnica 2.4.22 #1 Wed Oct 29 14:01:21 CET 2003 i586 GNU/Linux
No mail.
miernik@tarnica:~$
there is a 3.4 second delay after the "No mail." line, before
"miernik@tarnica:~$" appears.
How can I get rid of that delay?
What the system does in that time?
