People still use Java applets to do things? I thought they gave that up
as a bad job in mid-late 2000...

Either you have, or you haven't. Which is it?

I installed the Blackdown JRE and this is what I did:

Find the plugin. It's called javaplugin_oji.so , so I used "locate" and
found it in /opt/blackdown-jre-1.4.1/plugin/i386/mozilla/ .
YInstallationMV.

ln -s /PATH/TO/javaplugin_oji.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/javaplugin_oji.so

Restart Mozilla, enter about:plugins into the URL bar to make sure the
Java plugin was loaded.

Are you sure the JRE is installed?

Yes, if you plan to use Mozilla.

If you create the symlink, restart Mozilla, and you don't see the Java
plugin displayed in about:plugins , try starting Mozilla from a command
line in an xterm. That'll print diagnostic messages to stderr if a
plugin can't be loaded. I did this and found that the old Blackdown
plugin (version 1.3.1) wasn't compatible with something or other in
Mozilla 1.4. The 1.4.1 plugin worked fine. HTH,
