If you have a pdf file which is basically just a huge image, then
xpdf is uncomparably faster than acroread. Just try any map from
http://www.translink.bc.ca/Bus_Routes/mapnav/default.asp
At first it just creates a bitmap image which one can pan around.
On the other hand, if one of those files are opened in acroread
(and they don't work very well), then every time the image is
panned, it gets redrawn, or at least the now visible parts.
