My experience is different. I have run RedHat, fedora, and now slackware.
I have the AC97 integrated onboard sound but it conflicted with my NIC on
RH and fedora (knoppix showed me this). So I disabled that onboard sound
in the BIOS and bought a cheap pci sound card, which works.
