Ah, a non-NPTL kernel. Yes, prior to NPTL threads had independent
process IDs. Which distribution are you using? I'd thought even the
stock kernels had NPTL in them as of recent versions. I'd certainly
recommend applying the NPTL patches, they've been IME highly stable.
