Retrieving data from tapes created on VMS system

Hello,

I need to retrieve data files from DLT tapes which were saved in save
sets using the VMS 'backup' command.

The final destination will be an NT/W2K box :-(

My initial thought was to find some NT software which would allow my
DLT to retrieve the VMS formated tapes, but I could not find and
software that could guarantee that it would read such tapes. Anyway,
those that I looked at were _very_ expensive.

Back to trusty Linux. My next idea was to use linux to retrieve the
data to a samba share, then transfer the data to the NT box.

The 'VMS to Linux Howto' mentions using a 'dd' method but I think this
is for DECFILES11A type tapes where the files were directly copied to
the tape, not suitable for backups using save sets.

A google search turned up something called 'vmsbackup', which looked
just the ticket, but I cannot find a link to source/binary (would
prefer source tarball) anywhere :-(

I'm sure that someone else must have had this migration problem, can
anyone offer some advice, helpful links.

BTW, the data is on 180 DLTs, it's going to be a long haul...:-(
