Who told you that?

Just Ctrl-c to stop trying to load xdm/gdm/kdm; (it does stop after trying
few times anyways) Ctrl-Alt(F2-F3-F4-F5-F6) for a new (or 2 or 3 or 4
consoles) console session and login, take care of the problem with X

(usually something not right in /etc/X11/FX86Config file);

"startx" to get going with your GUI.
