It is saying that you can't boot linux from within NT. It is telling
the truth. NT runs in the Intel "protected mode", which means that NT
can prevent another program from taking over the hardware. DOS uses the
"real mode", which will allow any program to take over the hardware.

You need to boot Phat from DOS, not DOS-under-NT. But if your aims is
to try out Linux without disturbing your NT install, I suggest Knoppix.
It boots and runs directly from a CD and does not touch your hard disk.
