If your ping doesn't work in either direction, ssh will not work as
some packets travelling in that direction will never be seen by the
other machine. Check whether the network card on the desktop machine
is configured properly. A shared IRQ number perhaps?

It is, but only after you get your basic (low-level) networking
working properly.
