Bob,
I suggest you play with the server within your home network (get a router)
until you are comfortable with it.
If you have home service from you ISP, you will probably be violating your
contract if you run a web server. That said, the ISP probably won't care
(i.e. won't take action) if your volume is low. The biggest problem you
will have is that you probably do not have a fixed IP. While many ISPs give
out IPs that do not change very often to High Speed customers, you have no
guarantee that your IP will remain constant. Whenever it changes, all links
to your old IP are broken.
Get a good firewall and learn to configure it properly before your open your
server up to the world. Also, be very meticulous about locking down your
server. Make sure all accounts have strong passwords (get rid of unneeded
accounts). Do not run (or even install) anything not strictly needed for
running the server. DON'T run XWindows. Get rid of telnet. Do a google on
locking down Linux boxes - there are many good docs out there on the
internet. Do not treat your web server as a trusted computer - the whole
world has access to it, so assume it's been contaminated by an enemy.
Regards
Jeff
